Coaching & Referee Courses
Compulsory – Each team must have their Coaches and Assistant Coaches complete this course
They must complete the course every year (regardless of whether they have previously completed it)
This is the entry level for the coaching pathway and focuses on Junior Rugby from Under 6 through to Under 13. NZR policy makes this course compulsory and is to be attended by all coaches and assistant coaches of these age grades.
Each course is approximately two hours and includes a small theory section for all coaches followed by a practical session.
The interactive practical session will see the group split into the three corresponding grades for Small Blacks Rugby:
- NZR Beginning Rugby: Rippa Rugby Under 6 & Under 7
- NZR Learning Rugby: Under 8 to Under 10
- NZR Playing Rugby: Under 11 to Under 13
Each course is tailored to give coaches the knowledge and skills required to coach at their respective levels. The course will provide basic principles for coaching skills that are relevant to each age group.
At the end of the course coaches will be required to complete a NZR Coach Registration form (which includes information about the Police Vetting process) as well as receive some free resources including coaching cards and booklets as well as an access card to the NZR Coaching Toolbox website.
Please ensure you bring 2 forms of photo ID to the course.
Coach Collaboration Project:
Auckland Rugbys new Coach Collaboration Project will launch in 2018. After surveying the junior clubs on the areas they feel their coaches needed upskilling and education around, Auckland Rugby have designed a series of interactive workshops using expert consultants and up to date literature on youth sport best practice. The aim is to educate our coaches on current issues in youth sport whilst providing them with the tools to deliver the best possible experience for our junior rugby participants. Auckland Rugby strongly encourage junior coach attendance.
These workshops will be held across the 4 regions within the Auckland Provincial Union on Monday evenings during the season 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
